How Do I Know If My Popcorn Ceiling Has Been Painted?
One of the easiest ways to tell if a popcorn ceiling has been painted is by its texture and appearance. Unpainted popcorn ceilings are typically soft and chalky to the touch and will crumble easily when lightly rubbed.
If the ceiling has a noticeable sheen or shine, feels hard to the touch, or the texture peels away in strips rather than crumbling, it has likely been painted at some point.
If you’re still unsure, don’t worry. Our team can quickly determine whether your popcorn ceiling has been painted during your free estimate.
Is It More Expensive to Remove a Painted Popcorn Ceiling?
Yes. Painted popcorn ceiling removal typically costs about $1 more per square foot than removing an unpainted popcorn ceiling.
The reason is that painted popcorn is much more difficult to remove. Once the popcorn texture has been scraped away, painted ceilings often reveal additional imperfections, damage, and uneven areas that require extra plaster and repair work to achieve a smooth finish.
Because of the added preparation, repairs, and labor involved, painted popcorn ceilings generally take more time and materials to complete properly. During your free estimate, we can assess your ceiling and provide an accurate quote based on its condition.
Should I Be Concerned About Asbestos, and Who Should I Contact?
If your home was built before 1985, it is strongly recommended that your popcorn ceiling be tested for asbestos before any removal work begins. While not all older popcorn ceilings contain asbestos, testing is the only way to know for certain.
Because asbestos can pose serious health risks when disturbed, it should only be handled by qualified asbestos testing and abatement professionals. Asbestos removal companies are separate from popcorn ceiling removal companies and are specially trained, certified, and equipped to safely test for and remove asbestos-containing materials.
If you’re unsure about the age of your home or whether your ceiling should be tested, we recommend contacting a professional asbestos testing company before proceeding with any ceiling removal work.
Why Should I Remove My Popcorn Ceiling?
Removing a popcorn ceiling is one of the most effective ways to modernize and refresh the appearance of your home. Smooth ceilings create a cleaner, brighter, and more spacious look, allowing natural and artificial light to reflect more evenly throughout the room.
In addition to improving appearance, smooth ceilings are easier to clean and maintain because they don’t collect dust and cobwebs the way textured ceilings often do. They can also help reduce places where insects and spiders tend to gather.
Another advantage is that smooth ceilings make it much easier to identify water stains, leaks, or other ceiling damage early on. Popcorn texture can often conceal these issues, allowing them to go unnoticed until they become more serious.
Whether you’re planning to enjoy your home for years to come or preparing it for resale, removing popcorn ceilings is a timeless upgrade that can enhance both the appearance and overall value of your property.

Do I Need to Paint the Walls After Having My Ceilings Refinished?
In most cases, yes. This is something many contractors fail to explain before the project begins.
Over the years, we have found that attempting to fully mask and protect painted walls with adhesive plastic can sometimes cause more damage than it prevents. When the protective materials are removed, sections of wall paint may peel or lift away from the drywall surface.
Unfortunately, this is not something that can be predicted in advance. It can occur with old paint, new paint, premium paint, or inexpensive paint. In many cases, it is simply the result of how well the paint has bonded to the wall over time.
Because of this, homeowners should expect that some wall touch-ups or repainting may be required after a ceiling refinishing project is completed.
While we take every reasonable precaution to protect your home, wall paint adhesion is beyond our control.
We believe in being transparent with our customers so there are no surprises during or after the project.
How Many Coats of Plaster Are Required After Popcorn Ceiling Removal?
There is no set number of plaster coats required for every ceiling. The amount of plaster needed can only be determined after the popcorn texture has been removed and the condition of the ceiling underneath has been assessed.
Some ceilings may require only one skim coat to achieve a smooth finish, while others may need several coats depending on the quality of the original drywall, previous repairs, seams, imperfections, or damage hidden beneath the popcorn texture.
At Smooth Ceilings, our goal is not to apply a specific number of coats, but rather to apply as many as necessary to achieve a properly finished, smooth ceiling. Every project is different, and we take the time to ensure the final result meets our high standards of quality.
Is There Any Work That Should Be Completed Before Removing a Popcorn Ceiling?
Yes. If you are planning to add pot lights, new light fixtures, ceiling fans, or any other electrical work, we strongly recommend having the electrical completed before your ceiling is refinished.
Many homeowners choose to upgrade their lighting as part of their ceiling renovation. Installing pot lights after a ceiling has already been refinished may require cutting into the newly finished surface, which can result in additional repairs and unnecessary costs.
By completing the electrical work first, we can ensure that any openings, wiring, and modifications are addressed before the ceiling is refinished, helping to achieve the best possible final result.
If you’re considering pot lights or other electrical upgrades, we’re happy to discuss the best timing and layout options during your free estimate.
Does Furniture Need to Be Removed Before Popcorn Ceiling Removal?
Any furniture that can be safely moved out of the work area should be removed before the project begins. This helps create a safer workspace and reduces the risk of accidental damage during the ceiling refinishing process.
Larger items such as beds, dressers, pianos, and china cabinets can typically remain in the room, as our team will properly cover and protect them before work begins.
We also recommend removing all pictures, mirrors, and wall decorations prior to our arrival. Area rugs and loose carpets should be removed as well to help protect them from dust and construction debris.
During your free estimate, we’ll review your space and let you know exactly what should be moved and what can safely remain in place.
Can We Stay in the Home While the Work Is Being Completed?
Yes, homeowners can remain in the home during the project. However, we do not recommend spending time in the areas where ceiling refinishing is actively taking place, as there may be dust generated during certain stages of the process.
We also recommend limiting foot traffic through the work areas whenever possible. Walking through active work zones can unintentionally track dust into other parts of the home that are not being renovated.
As long as you remain in rooms and areas where work is not being performed, you can comfortably stay in your home throughout the project. Our team will discuss the work schedule with you in advance so you know which areas will be affected each day.
Your comfort and safety are important to us, and we take every reasonable precaution to keep the work area contained and organized throughout the project.
